The Art of Aging in Place: Designing for Longevity

As we age, our needs and abilities may change. By designing homes that can adapt to these changes, we can ensure a comfortable and independent lifestyle for years to come. Please remember that all of these tips are useful for aging in our homes, but they are good choices for all ages and abilities.

Key Considerations for Aging in Place:

  1. Universal Design:

    • Accessible Entryways: Ensure that doorways, hallways, and ramps are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers.

    • Adaptive Bathrooms: Design bathrooms with grab bars, non-slip flooring, and walk-in showers.

    • Level Floors: Avoid steps and level changes within the home.

  2. Flexible Living Spaces:

    • Multi-Functional Rooms: Create flexible spaces that can adapt to changing needs, such as a home office that can be converted into a guest room.

    • Open Floor Plans: Open floor plans can make it easier to navigate and clean.

  3. Safety Features:

    • Good Lighting: Install adequate lighting throughout the home, especially in hallways and stairwells.

    • Non-Slip Flooring: Choose flooring materials that are slip-resistant, especially in wet areas.

    • Secure Handrails: Install sturdy handrails on stairs and in bathrooms. Where grab bars aren’t being installed, provide blocking so that they can be easily added later!

By planning ahead and incorporating these design principles, you can create a home that supports your well-being and allows you to age gracefully.

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
