Patriotism in Inclusive Design

Celebrating Belonging, Not Just Borders

The large open entry in this home ensures comfortable access for all guests

At Waldron Designs, we believe patriotism is more than waving a flag—it’s a commitment to inclusivity, stewardship, and community. It’s about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, where materials and layouts honor both people and the planet, and where the true spirit of independence is found in the freedom to be oneself at home.

Lately, it’s easy to feel the world pulling people apart, pitting “us” against “them.” We hear stories of division, of people being told they don’t belong simply for being different. But we stand firm in our belief that a home—and a country—should be a melting pot, a place where diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just ideals, but lived values.

Our homes are reflections of who we are: artistic expressions, sanctuaries for loved ones, spaces for love and closeness, and gathering places for family. Naturally, they should also reflect our beliefs, cultures, and personal style. But how do we ensure our homes serve not just us, but also our guests—offering comfort, safety, and belonging to all who enter?

We often hear that grab bars make a space feel like a hospital… well, we beg to differ!

We start with accessibility. It’s surprising how often the idea of an accessible home is met with hesitation, as if it’s only for those nearing the end of life. In truth, designing for accessibility is about living life to the fullest. It means wood floors you can slide on without fear, kitchens where everyone—regardless of ability—can bake together, and bathrooms where grab bars offer peace of mind for grandparents and adventurers alike. Younger generations, especially, embrace the idea of homes that welcome everyone, recognizing that life can change in an instant.

Once we’ve created an accessible home, we’ve built a space where all ages and abilities can move freely and comfortably. But we don’t stop there. We also think about healthy spaces—homes where the air is fresh, where environmental controls keep things just right, and where every choice, from heating to furniture, supports well-being. We’ve all been in homes that feel musty, overly fragrant, or uncomfortably cold. By considering the needs of others—like in-floor heating for chilly feet, or exhaust fans that clear the air after cooking—we create environments that nurture everyone.

Our homes should absolutely be designed for us, but they should also consider the comfort of others. If we love bright, airy spaces, is there a cozy, darker nook for those who need refuge? Does our layout offer open areas for friends who feel confined in tight spaces? At Waldron Designs, we love creating homes that balance these needs, guided by the wisdom of “everything in moderation.” After all, life is full of surprises—an injury, a season of grief, or simply the passage of time can change what we need from our spaces.

While inclusivity is beautiful, we understand that some may worry about designing for others instead of themselves. Our goal is always to tailor each design to you—your life, your dreams, your story. But we also know that you will change, because change is human. That’s why we design with flexibility, foresight, and care, creating homes that grow and adapt with you.

At the heart of it all, we believe in the power of home to nurture, inspire, and connect. Here, belonging isn’t just an idea—it’s a feeling, a promise, and a daily practice.

Our Passion. Your Paradise.

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
