A Design Melting Pot
One of our multiple visits to the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine (my favorite) and the excellent street market as we entered the shrine.
One of my favorite things about living in the USA is the tapestry of cultures woven into our daily lives. I can stroll downtown for authentic Mexican food, wander into a boutique Indian shop, and finish with a boba tea—each stop a little journey in itself. Our cities thrive with vibrant neighborhoods like Chinatown and celebrate Latin culture through community events and art. Some of my most cherished treasures are the small, heartfelt pieces I’ve picked up at local gatherings—like the adorable drawing I scored from a young artist at a Latin cultural festival.
Bringing the world into our homes isn’t just about collecting souvenirs—it’s about embracing the wisdom, comfort, and beauty of other cultures. Think of Chinoiserie, the European interpretation of Chinese art, or the way Japanese washlet toilets and bathing rooms have transformed our daily routines. (Honestly, I can’t imagine life without them now!) Or consider the multigenerational homes of Mexico, where families grow together, support one another’s dreams, and pass traditions down through the years.
Six years ago, a trip to Japan left a lasting impression. We fell in love with the quiet elegance of textured materials, the ritual of bathing rooms, and the thoughtful approach to hygiene. The flexible sleeping spaces—perfect for family slumber parties—inspired us to rethink how we use every inch of our homes.
Scandinavian minimalism brought us hygge—the art of cozy comfort. What could be better than a trend that reminds us to slow down and savor the simple joys? In Morocco, we discovered the magic of courtyard homes, where lush gardens and hidden alcoves blur the line between indoors and out, offering privacy and a sense of sanctuary.
I hate to say it, but Japan is still lightyears ahead of us in toileting (and this was taken 6 years ago!)
American homes have often kept kitchens tucked away, but in India, kitchens are open and alive with conversation. Bringing this idea into our own homes transforms meal prep into a shared experience, fostering community and connection. And let’s not forget the private nooks for reflection—because even in the busiest homes, everyone needs a quiet corner.
Australia’s indoor-outdoor living spaces—decks, verandas, and gardens—remind us to embrace our temperate climate. Why not let the outdoors become an extension of our living rooms, especially here in the Pacific Northwest?
We may not all have the chance to travel the world, but we can invite the world into our homes through design, culture, and understanding.
