Summer Maintenance Series: Flooring That Loves You Back- Caring for Wood, Marmoleum, Tile, and Cork

Your floors are the unsung heroes of your home. They greet bare feet on lazy summer mornings, catch the crumbs from impromptu picnics, and set the tone for every gathering. Whether you’ve chosen classic hardwood, resilient marmoleum, timeless tile, or soft, sustainable cork, a little mindful care goes a long way.

Wood Flooring

Why We Love It:
Wood floors, whether engineered or hardwood, are timeless, durable, and can last for generations with proper care. When sourced responsibly, they’re a sustainable choice that brings warmth and natural beauty to any room.

Sustainable Care Tips:

  • Daily Dusting: Use a microfiber mop or soft broom to sweep up dust and debris. This prevents scratches and keeps allergens at bay.

  • Gentle Cleaning: Mop with a damp (not wet) cloth and a pH-neutral, biodegradable cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals or steam mops, which can damage the finish.

  • Protect from Sun: Use curtains or blinds to prevent fading in sun-exposed areas. Rearranging rugs and furniture occasionally helps keep color even.

  • Prevent Scratches: Place felt pads under furniture legs and encourage a shoes-off policy indoors.

  • Refresh the Finish: Every few years, consider recoating with a low-VOC, plant-based finish to restore luster and protect the wood.

Linoleum Flooring

Why We Love It:
Linoleum is made from natural ingredients like linseed oil, wood flour, and jute. It’s biodegradable, anti-microbial, and incredibly resilient-a true champion of sustainable design.

Sustainable Care Tips:

  • Regular Sweeping: Keep grit and dirt off the surface with a soft broom or vacuum.

  • Damp Mopping: Clean with a well-wrung mop and a gentle, pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid soaking the floor, as excess moisture can seep into seams.

  • Stain Removal: For stubborn spots, use a diluted vinegar solution or a manufacturer-recommended cleaner.

  • Polish Occasionally: If the floor starts to lose its sheen, a natural wax polish can revive its glow.

Tile Flooring

Why We Love It:
Tile is long-lasting, easy to clean, and often made from natural clay or recycled materials. It’s perfect for high-traffic areas and adds a cool touch underfoot in summer.

Sustainable Care Tips:

  • Routine Cleaning: Sweep or vacuum regularly to prevent grit from scratching the glaze.

  • Mop with Care: Use a mild, eco-friendly cleaner and avoid anything too acidic, which can erode grout.

  • Grout Attention: Clean grout lines with a paste of baking soda and water, using a soft brush. Seal grout annually with a low-VOC sealer to prevent stains and mold.

  • Prevent Cracks: Place mats at entryways to catch dirt and pebbles that could chip the surface.

Cork Flooring

Why We Love It:
Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without harming the tree, making it one of the most renewable flooring options available. It’s soft underfoot, naturally insulating, and hypoallergenic.

Sustainable Care Tips:

  • Sweep Often: Use a soft broom or vacuum with a hardwood floor attachment.

  • Damp Mop Gently: Clean with a damp mop and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner. Never use excessive water, as cork is sensitive to moisture.

  • Protect from Furniture: Use pads under heavy furniture and avoid dragging items across the floor.

  • Renew the Finish: Every few years, reapply a water-based polyurethane or wax finish to maintain its resilience and beauty.

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
