Dockton Garage Conversion

A bright, artistic sanctuary created from a once-dark utility space.

Repurposing existing structures is the ultimate form of sustainable design, as it prevents unnecessary building waste and minimizes our footprint on the land. For this project, Sean provided the essential architectural drawings, ensuring the existing truss system was structurally sound and met all King County requirements.

The starting point: A standard 2-car garage with hidden potential.

The Interior Vision: A "Daylit" Sanctuary

The breezeway was once a utilitarian "buffer," but our client dreamed of an artistic, light-filled lounge for music and crafting. Since the project was on a budget and a traditional skylight wasn't feasible, we turned to creative lighting design:

  • An illusion of sky: We painted the once ‘unattractive’ trusses and ceiling a bright, crisp white.

  • Strategic Uplighting: By tucking lights along the trusses to wash the ceiling, we created the distinct feeling of sunlight pouring in from an unseen source.

The original breezeway was a dark, utilitarian pass-through.

Handcrafted Quality

One of the most inspiring parts of this "Project Transformation" was the collaboration with the homeowner. A true craftsman, he served as the builder and personally hand-built every component of the cabinetry—from the doors to the drawer boxes. This level of dedication to craftsmanship and quality is exactly what we look for in our Waldron Score evaluations.

Custom cabinetry and architectural details handcrafted by the homeowner, creating a space of true "Heirloom Quality".

By celebrating the original structure rather than hiding it, we created a high-impact design that stayed on budget.

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
