Design-Driven Decluttering: Creating Space for What Matters

As we welcome the fresh energy of spring, it's the perfect time to reassess our living spaces and create room for what truly matters. At Waldron Designs, we believe that great design and thoughtful organization go hand in hand, working together to create spaces that are not just beautiful, but functional and nurturing.

The Harmony of Design and Organization

Design, at its core, is about order. It's a delicate balance of logic and artistry, where planning, coordination, and tracking meet creativity. As designers, we're guided by principles like repetition, balance, pattern, unity, variety, and hierarchy. These elements come together to create spaces that are both visually appealing and purposeful.

Clutter, on the other hand, is the antithesis of good design. It creates tension and confusion, making it difficult to focus and find peace in our surroundings. Whether your style leans towards minimalism or maximalism, there should always be a sense of order in your space. This doesn't mean stark or severe interiors – rather, it's about creating a harmonious environment where every element has its place and purpose.

We believe in creating intentional spaces that reflect not just aesthetics, but also the unique needs and passions of those who inhabit them. Our approach considers the regional context, immediate surroundings, and the lifestyle of the occupants. This holistic vision ensures that every space we create is not just a room, but a carefully composed artistic statement.

This space has a clear hierarchy in scale and color. Our eye is drawn first to the light fixture, then to the floor to ceiling window, and third to the little table on the right.

Seeing Your Space Through a Designer's Eye

To declutter with a design-driven approach, start by evaluating each item in your space for both aesthetic and functional value. A helpful trick is to photograph your rooms and vignettes. This allows you to step back and see your space as a composition, identifying areas that need attention.

Every space should have a focal point – be it a stunning view, a piece of art, or an architectural feature. Choose this focal point and allow other elements in the room to support and draw attention to it. This creates a visual hierarchy that guides the eye and brings order to your space.

Strategic Decluttering for Design Lovers

One of the biggest challenges in decluttering is dealing with collections. The key is to designate special spaces for these items, allowing them to shine. For example, we recently worked with a client who had several musical instruments. We suggested mounting frames on the walls to display each instrument, creating an orderly yet accessible arrangement. This approach can be adapted for almost any collection – we'd love to hear about your unique decluttering challenges in the comments!

Storage Solutions that Enhance Design

Storage doesn't have to be hidden away – it can be a design feature in itself. Consider integrated storage concepts that blend seamlessly with your interiors. For instance, storage under stairs can be highlighted with stylistic reveals, turning a functional necessity into a design element.

In the Pacific Northwest Contemporary style, we focus on transparency, connection to nature, and regionalism. This can translate into storage solutions that bring the outdoors in or use natural materials in innovative ways.

Maintaining a Design-Driven Organized Home

To keep your space feeling fresh and organized, consider seasonal refresh strategies. Use nature's gifts to decorate – evergreens in winter, fresh flowers in spring, beach finds in summer, and autumn leaves in fall.

When acquiring new items, resist the urge to impulse buy. Develop a plan for your home decor and stick to it. Before bringing anything new home, consider how it will be used and reused, or how it can be returned to nature when its time is up.

Empowering You to Create Intentional Spaces

At Waldron Designs, we're committed to creating functional, beautiful spaces that reflect the unique character of each homeowner. By applying these design-driven decluttering principles, you can transform your home into a thoughtfully composed space that nurtures and inspires.

Remember, the relationship between design and organization is ongoing. It's about creating systems that support your vision and lifestyle. Whether it's carrying a photo of your ideal space as a reminder or creating a checklist of requirements for new items, find what works for you and stick with it.

We'd love to hear how you're applying these principles in your own home. Share your design-driven decluttering stories in the comments below!

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
