Virtual Color Consultations? But, How?

Honestly, when COVID hit, I thought color consultations were out of the question. I knew that I had done several projects in the past with color, finishes, fixtures, and more all virtually, but chalked it up to my amateur times and assumed I had made horrible mistakes.

Then, I pulled out my old photos, and… they all looked fabulous! What had I done?

How is it that my color consultation in L.A. and North Carolina turned out beautifully?

Then, I remembered… yes, it took a little extra legwork on both ends, but we managed to make it work. So, when my New York client called asking for color assistance with her Brooklyn apartment, I was ready to go!

First, I assigned her some homework:

Off to the paint store to find the closest possible paint swatches to the colors we were looking to coordinate with. This way, she was able to take pictures of what she thought were the closest matches. I simultaneously pulled out my paint deck, and we started with a fun visual text conversation while talking on the phone! Yes, most of this conversation was “Okay, I just sent you something… did you get it yet?”

She had an emerald green wall in her bedroom that she loved, and wasn’t sure what the best way was to create cohesiveness in the rest of the space. She also has a dated kitchen that was clearly assembled with whatever discounted materials were available. A Terra-cotta floor with black Formica counters, pink and green backsplash and dated cabinetry. The real challenge was that all she had the budget for was wall paint. How to make it all work together???!!

It looks like we managed to do a lovely color update to this Brooklyn bedroom, despite the long-distance! The kitchen was a bit more challenging, but we rose to the challenge and yes… I still want to replace the backsplash, flooring, counters… okay the whole thing. But a little color sure does create a more pulled together look!

While it can’t be seen in these photos (we had many more texts), the backsplash had a subtle green, so we chose a dark grey with a subtle green to create connection between the different finishes.

We were having so much fun, we added one more special touch, and I think this final one is the highlight. She had beat up window framing with no real trimwork and a blah front door. Blah… no more!

Big thanks to our lovely, talented, whimsical, artistic, creative, genius Brooklyn client for trusting us to select colors for your apartment from 2,870 miles away!!

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
