Beyond Beige: Designing Gender-Neutral Spaces That Shine

Gone are the days when design dictated a room's purpose based on pink for girls and blue for boys. Let’s be honest, color has no gender!Today, we're embracing a more inclusive approach to interior design, creating spaces that celebrate individuality and cater to a broader range of personalities.

Ditch the Duality:

First things first, let's break free from the binary. Move beyond the idea that every design element needs to be paired with its "opposite." This doesn't mean eliminating traditionally masculine or feminine elements altogether. Instead, focus on creating a harmonious blend. A floral print armchair can look stunning next to a sleek, industrial coffee table. The key is balance and unexpected pairings.

Play with Color:

The color spectrum is vast and beautiful! Move beyond the limitations of pink and blue. Earthy tones like warm browns, rich greens, and calming blues create a sense of serenity that works for everyone. Don't be afraid to experiment with bolder hues like jewel tones or pops of vibrant color – after all, personality has no color!

And, let’s be honest, it’s okay to embrace pink, purple and navy blue regardless of your gender. It’s all about what we love.

Embrace Pattern and Texture:

Texture adds depth and visual interest to any space. Combine smooth surfaces with woven rugs, plush throws, and tactile furniture upholstery. Patterned wallpaper or a statement rug can become the focal point of a room, and geometric prints offer a modern touch without being overly gendered.

Furniture with Flair:

Opt for clean lines, interesting silhouettes, and a mix of materials. A vintage chaise lounge can add a touch of glamour, while modern armchairs with clean lines offer a sleek aesthetic. Consider furniture with multiple functions, like ottomans with storage or modular pieces that can be reconfigured to suit different needs.

Lighting Sets the Mood:

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the ambiance. Layer your lighting with a mix of overhead fixtures, task lighting, and accent pieces. Warm white bulbs create a cozy feel, while cooler tones can add a touch of energy. Consider dimmer switches to adjust the mood throughout the day.

Accessorize with Intention:

Accessories are the finishing touches that personalize a space. Instead of relying on gendered symbols, focus on pieces that reflect your interests and hobbies. A collection of travel souvenirs, framed artwork with bold colors, or a curated selection of books can all add a touch of personality.

Ultimately, a gender-neutral space is a reflection of the people who inhabit it. By embracing a diverse range of colors, textures, patterns, and styles, you can create a space that is both stylish and welcoming for everyone. So, ditch the design stereotypes and create a haven that reflects your unique personality, regardless of gender!

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
