How Custom Interior Strategy Transforms a New Build

When you decide to build a new home, you are stepping into one of the most exciting creative journeys of your life. You get to start with a clean slate!

Sometimes, people think that starting the design phase of a new build is just about getting "drawings" on paper; putting down a basic footprint with a box marked for the kitchen, a spot for the bed, and a placeholder for the bath. But if you’re building custom, generic placeholders miss the best part of the process!

The true magic of building new isn't just creating a space; it’s crafting your space.

Thorough design goes far beyond documenting blanket rooms. It’s an interactive, collaborative experience where we dive into how you actually live, move, and thrive in your home.

Designing from the Inside Out

When interior design and architecture work together from day one, every single square foot is intentionally mapped to your lifestyle needs before a single nail is driven. We don't just hand over a plan; we work through interviews, lifestyle observations, and fun back-and-forth conversations to get every detail right.

Here is what happens when we design for real life:

  • Intelligent Kitchen Zoning: We look at how your kitchen functions during high-energy moments. How do multiple cooks move around the island without bumping elbows? How do we adjust heights and prep zones so the space serves everyone comfortably and safely?

  • Designing Around Your Real Furniture: We map your beloved, existing furniture pieces directly into the CAD drawings. That way, we know your reading chair has the perfect window light, floor outlets land right where your end tables sit, and traffic paths flow naturally.

  • Harmonizing Finishes, Light & Spatial Flow: Materials aren't just picked from a display board at the end; they interact directly with the home's architecture and natural light. In fact, these selections define the final design just as much as the room dimensions do! We curate warm, non-toxic textures (evaluated using our data-driven Waldron Score) that complement one another, honor healthy indoor air quality, and elevate the atmosphere of every single space.

(Curious about how we source these pieces, pair textures, and collaborate with local artisans behind the scenes? Stay tuned! We’re putting the finishing touches on an article dedicated entirely to interior selections and our sourcing process!)

  • Universal Design & Living in Place: A truly custom home grows with you. By integrating thoughtful accessibility, like zero-threshold transitions and smart spatial clearances, your home remains effortless and comfortable through every phase of life, without ever feeling institutional.

  • Real Appliance Integration: Instead of standard cutout placeholders, we design around exact appliance specifications, swing paths, and utility needs upfront, avoiding tricky field adjustments down the road.

The Power of a Complete Fit-Out

We are often asked about interior fit-outs and finish selections. It’s easy to think of fit-outs as purely decorative, but in reality, your finish and fixture selections direct the entire design.

When we select your cabinetry, tile, lighting, and plumbing early in the process, we aren't just choosing items that look beautiful together. We are creating a complete technical roadmap for your builder. Locking in these details early:

  1. Protects Your Budget: Clear specifications allow your contractor to price the project accurately long before construction starts, eliminating unexpected mid-build surprises.

  2. Guarantees Fit & Compatibility: Every plumbing rough-in, electrical requirement, and tile line is accounted for in the master drawings.

  3. Saves You Time & Stress: You get to enjoy a curated, cohesive design vision without the overwhelm of managing endless trade spreadsheets or last-minute job site calls.

Your new build is an incredible opportunity to create a sanctuary tailored entirely to you. We love taking that journey alongside our clients, turning abstract ideas into spaces that feel like home the moment you step inside.

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
