Full Home Design: Foundation to Furnishings

Vashon Island is a magical place to live, and many people dream of building a home here. What we don’t dream about when we dream of relocation, is the realization that our existing furnishings don’t work, or that there aren’t enough or the right furnishings for the new home. And, the furnishings that DO work need to be located, understood as to where they should live and how to best use existing items in a new space.

Fortunately, as an interior design and architecture firm, we can work with you to inventory your existing furnishings and develop a plan for integration with new furnishings down to the final decor to ensure that on moving day, the home is ready to walk in, sit down, and relax.

Design Services for New Construction:

Pre-Design: We will review your site and coordinate the CAD (Critical Areas Designation) with the county. We will analyze views, neighboring properties, wind, and daylight to create a home that utilizes all of what nature has to offer.

We coordinate historical properties, tribal land considerations, and coordinate with Geotech and wetlands specialists to get all the important research documented and prepared to ensure that the permitting process runs smoothly

We want to ensure that your new home or modifications of the existing one are appropriate for you and for the site. While it’s true that we need to satisfy jurisdictional requirements, our focus is on creating spaces that work well for you. Spaces that connect you to your surroundings and provide opportunities for reflection and inspiration. Solitary spaces for introspection and more generous ones for gathering and sharing. To achieve this, we use the pre-design phase to study your site and uncover its inherent characteristics. Part of that includes analyzing critical features like steep slopes or wetlands. But it also means exploring opportunities that may be available.

We consider, for example, prevailing winds as an opportunity for passive ventilation and also as something we may need to mitigate for outdoor spaces. We enjoy working with consultants too. Other professionals like geotechnical engineers often work with us to provide documentation required for permit but walking the site with them typically uncovers interesting or inspiring context as well.

While the pre-design phase doesn’t typically include capital ‘D’ Design, it’s the foundation for our project. It provides the initial opportunities and constraints from which we’ll shape the project moving forward.

The Design Process will include the design of your building envelope in its entirety, down to the transition from one floor surface to the next, backsplash details and shower and bath niches. Our design department ensures that the smallest decisions have been made and are thoroughly documented.

Floor Plans for new construction include preliminary furnishing layouts and guidance for how to best take advantage of views, while considering the cozy warmth of that fireplace, and viewing space for the television. We can inventory your existing furnishings and consider these pieces in your new layout, even designing specialized spaces for your significant sentimental items.

Where new furniture is needed, we can provide custom-designed pieces to best suit your home, or we can work with local retail showrooms to make selections that you may purchase independently.

Custom-designed furniture will be stored in our warehouse where it is inspected upon arrival and delivered to your home with a white glove installation service.

Ship Furnishings and Decor Prior to Arrival and we will work with our stagers and your moving company to develop a fully fleshed out home complete to the final decor in place for your arrival!
