Designing for Migraines

Did you know that 39 MILLION Americans suffer from migraines? With migraines being a fairly common ailment, it only makes sense to consider both what prompts these episodes, but also a respite when we experience them.

Each of us at Waldron Designs has experienced migraines in one form or another. As many of us know, sometimes the only cure for a migraine is simply going back to bed. Everyone’s trigger is different, with some being over exercising or allergies.

There are, however, common triggers that can be eliminated when developing a design for any space within a home or business.

Prevent Glare

Our most commonly used counter materials are polished, and white is a bit hit. While we love the idea of allowing light into a home, the glare on a brilliant white, shiny counter could ultimately trigger migraines. When selecting a white counter, consider a honed finish to reduce the risk of glare in your space. The white will still reflect the light, but in a less harsh way.

Provide Dimmer switches

We love dimmer switches. In fact, we recently had a scare where a homeowner let us know they had read about harmful radiation coming from dimmer switches and we had a moment of panic in terms of how we design. Luckily, we did some research and found that the amount of radiation from a dimmer switch is so minimal that it truly is not a health risk (you know, like the sun in small increments).

Dimmer switches also allow us to reduce the light to a comfortable level when a migraine may be coming off and for anyone who has headed off a migraine, we know what a relief that is!

Dry and well-insulated

Mold and dampness can create unhealthy air quality, resulting in an increase of migraine instances. Ensuring a home is air-tight and keeps the moisture out properly can contribute to healthy indoor air and therefore fewer episodes.

We also like to create a space in every home that is a reprieve from a migraine episode. We typically like a bedroom for this, for obvious reasons (a place to go back to bed!), and provide the following features in these spaces. These features work well in any bedroom, making the design serve multiple purposes (ie. sleep)

Blackout curtains

Providing a space to go and completely shut out all light is a massive benefit to those who suffer from migraines. Sometimes we may wish for a windowless room, but the ventilation windows provide is so beneficial that we prefer options to block out that light as much as possible.

Dark, matte paint

A matte paint will reduce glare, and assist with the removal of light from the space. The dark color will further this, giving migraine sufferers a space that aids in the recovery from the migraine.



It’s also a good idea to consider scents and temperature, but these vary from person to person. Some might need to eliminate scents where others may find it soothing. Some of us need a warm cocoon to soothe those migraines where others may need a cool, refreshing space. These elements can be adjusted on an as-needed basis, provided that we have the tools to adjust them (windows that can open and close, for example).

Following these steps will not eliminate our bright and airy spaces. Instead, it will become, light, airy, and soothing!!
