Decked Out: A Pacific Northwest Outdoor Living Story
Some projects leave a mark on your heart, and this one-let’s call it the “Artist’s Garden Deck”-is one we’ll never forget. Our clients, whom we’ll call “Marie and Tom” (not their real names), were the kind of people who brought warmth wherever they went. Years after their project wrapped, they’d still pop by our office for a hug and a chat, right up until the day they moved into retirement living. We miss their visits, but their story lives on in the cozy spaces we created together.
An Artist’s Sanctuary, Inside and Out
Marie was a passionate gardener, her home nestled amid winding paths, lush with native Pacific Northwest plantings, and a pond that greeted guests with the gentle sound of water over a little bridge. She and Tom first invited us to design their bathroom and bedroom, spaces that became true artists’ refuges, layered with texture, dappled light, and playful patterns. When they decided to open their home for the local Garden Tour, they called us back to help transform their deck into an outdoor extension of their sanctuary.
Bringing Texture and Light Outdoors
Inspired by the natural beauty surrounding their home, we set out to make the deck as inviting as the gardens from the entry. Our approach echoed the core principles of Pacific Northwest outdoor living: blending indoor comforts with the wild charm of nature. We drew up a plan that layered textures. Think cozy, weather-resistant fabrics for cushions, refreshed paint colors for their trusty old furniture, and a layout that encouraged conversation and relaxation. Marie and Tom, both artists at heart, took joy in painting each piece themselves, infusing the space with their creative spirit.
Outdoor Living Tips: Make the Most of Your Space!
Start with a purpose: Decide how you want to use your outdoor area-relaxation, entertaining, gardening, or all of the above. This helps guide your layout and furniture choices.
Plan Your Layout: Arrange seating and tables to encourage conversation and easy movement. Leave enough space for people to walk comfortably-about 3 feet for main pathways is a good rule of thumb.
Layer in Comfort: Add cushions, throws, and outdoor rugs for coziness. Don’t be afraid to bring in color and pattern-your outdoor space is an extension of your home.
Think About Lighting: String lights, lanterns, or even up-lighting trees can make evenings magical and safe.
Create Shade & Shelter: Use umbrellas, pergolas, or even a cluster of potted plants to provide relief from sun and wind.
Mix Materials: Combine wood, metal, and natural fibers for a textural, inviting look that echoes the Pacific Northwest’s beauty.
Add Nature: Potted plants, a small water feature, or even a simple bird feeder can boost the biophilic vibe and support local wildlife
Climate Control: Consider a fire pit or patio heater for chilly evenings, and misters or fans for hot days
A Deck Designed for Gathering
We believe the best outdoor spaces are as functional as they are beautiful, especially in the Pacific Northwest, where the weather can be unpredictable. Our design included:
Flexible furniture layouts for lounging or hosting a crowd.
Thoughtful lighting to extend gatherings into the evening-because the best stories are told under twinkle lights.
Durable, sustainable materials that could handle a little drizzle and still look good as new.
Textural accents-pillows, throws, and potted plants-to mirror the layered look of Marie’s garden and create a seamless flow from indoors out.
A Celebration of Community and Nature
The result? A deck that felt like a natural extension of the home-cozy, creative, and ready-for-anything. Marie was so proud, she not only featured her home on the Garden Tour but also threw a backyard party, inviting friends and neighbors to gather, laugh, and soak in the views from her newly cushioned retreat. There’s something magical about sharing a meal outdoors, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Pacific Northwest-especially when every detail, from the paint on the chairs to the pattern on the pillows, tells a story.
Lessons from the Artist’s Garden Deck
This project is a reminder that outdoor living in the Pacific Northwest isn’t about grand gestures- it’s about thoughtful design, a dash of creativity, and a deep respect for the land. Whether you’re working with a sprawling backyard or a petite deck, you can create a space that’s both functional and beautiful, one that reflects your personality and welcomes the people you love.
