Biophilic Design: Bringing the Outdoors In (and Out!)

If you’ve ever felt instantly calmer after a walk through the woods or found yourself daydreaming by a window with a view, you’ve experienced the magic of biophilic design. At Waldron Designs, we believe that connecting your home to the natural world isn’t just beautiful-it’s essential for well-being. Let’s explore how biophilic design blurs the lines between inside and out, and how you can bring a little more nature into every corner of your life.

What is Biophilic Design?

Biophilic design is all about nurturing our innate connection to nature by weaving natural elements and patterns into our built environments. This approach goes beyond adding a few houseplants (though we love those!)-it’s about creating spaces that feel alive, harmonious, and deeply rooted in their surroundings.

Stephen Kellert, a pioneer in biophilic design, identified two key dimensions: the organic (naturalistic) dimension, which reflects our connection to shapes and forms found in nature, and the place-based (vernacular) dimension, which ties our spaces to the local culture and ecology. Together, these create holistic environments that support both human health and a sense of place.

The Language of Nature: Design Elements & Principles

Biophilic design is most powerful when it feels intentional and consistent-carrying the language of nature from your front door to your back garden. Here’s how to make it happen, whether you’re a designer or just a nature lover at heart:

  • Start with Your Surroundings:
Look outside! Are you nestled in a forest? Surrounded by evergreens? Let those textures, colors, and patterns inspire your interiors. For example, bring in wood with a grain that echoes the bark outside, or choose textiles that mimic the shapes of leaves or pine needles.

  • Blur the Boundaries:
Use large windows, glass doors, or even a row of potted plants to visually and physically connect your indoor and outdoor spaces. This seamless flow makes your home feel larger and more cohesive, and invites natural light and fresh air to dance through your rooms.

  • Consistency, Not Contrast:
While contrast is a classic design principle, biophilic design shines when your interiors and exteriors speak the same language. Repeat materials, colors, and textures both inside and out-think stone floors that continue onto a patio, or cedar accents that show up in both your living room and your deck.

  • Layer in Natural Elements:

    • Direct Nature: Add potted plants, fresh flowers, or even a small water feature indoors.

    • Indirect Nature: Use natural materials like wood, stone, bamboo, or wool.

    • Natural Analogues: Incorporate patterns and textures that mimic nature-like a rug with a leaf motif or wallpaper inspired by river stones.

  • Play with Light and Air:
Maximize natural light with sheer curtains or strategically placed mirrors. Consider operable windows or skylights for fresh air and shifting sunlight throughout the day.

  • Engage the Senses:
Nature isn’t just visual. Choose tactile materials (like linen or raw wood), add the sound of water or birdsong, and use natural scents (think cedar, lavender, or fresh earth) to create a truly immersive experience.

Simple Ways to Bring Nature Home

  • Place a cluster of potted ferns by your entryway or in your bathroom for a lush, spa-like vibe.

  • Use reclaimed wood for shelves, tables, or accent walls.

  • Choose stone or pebble tiles for a bathroom floor or kitchen backsplash.

  • Add a water feature-indoors or out-for soothing sound and movement (yes, the flowing cat water bowl works!)

  • Select fabrics and rugs with botanical prints or earthy textures.

  • Let your outdoor color palette guide your choices for interior paint and decor.

Why Biophilic Design Matters: Health & Wellness Benefits

Biophilic design isn’t just a trend- it’s a proven way to boost well-being. Studies show that connecting with nature through our homes can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Improve mood and mental clarity

  • Enhance creativity and productivity

  • Support faster healing and recovery

  • Foster deeper social connections

  • Encourage a greater appreciation for the environment

Even small touches, a view of greenery, sunlight streaming in, or the feel of smooth stone underfoot can have a profound impact on our daily lives and long-term health.

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
