Condescending, Snooty, Catty Interior Designers?!

I had the opportunity to meet with some of my colleagues recently, and we talked a bit about the personality stereotypes of interior designers. It's not good.  We are known to have an elitist attitude and to not play well with others. I'm here to tell you that times are changing! Today, we work together and provide referrals for one another. We build on our strengths by helping one another and provide better services to homeowners by utilizing other designers skillsets. No matter what we'd like to think, none of us do it ALL perfectly or know EVERYTHING there is to know!

Are Designers Catty?

I am so lucky to have these amazing local colleagues as resources!

I am so lucky to have these amazing local colleagues as resources!

Nope- we've said goodbye to that. Just look at this amazing group of designer colleagues that I utilize regularly as a resource. Each of these women have skillsets that are slightly different than my own. Each is an entrepreneur and has their own design firm. We are spread out over the Seattle area, and we stand together and help each other to make our projects the best they can be. Call it an extended office, a team of designers on your side when a single entrepreneur offers you a personalized service. What could be better?

Are Designers Condescending?

Am I going to walk into your home and act as though I am better than you? An elitist? Alrighty, let's come clean about something else. Most of us are a bit like the cobbler who's children does not have shoes. We dream of doing to our homes what we do every day to yours. So, elitist? Condescending? No way! A little envious, maybe. Professionals who truly know our industry and have seen it all (almost)- you better believe it. Trust us, but if your designer is talking down to you- tell them you can find a better friend and designer!

But, Designers are Definitely Snooty, right?

Here I am, so grateful to have worked with this AMAZING contractor!

Here I am, so grateful to have worked with this AMAZING contractor!

I hope not! I would have no right to be, myself. I enjoy the people I work with and for tremendously. I look for contractors where we can operate as a team. I'm not the "boss", though I may be a representative of the boss (that's you!). I'm no better than anyone on the team and am certainly not better than you. I have insight due to my education that others may not have. But, I'm sure you could blow me away with your knowledge in your field! So, let's all talk on the same level, have fun with the work, and rock out these projects!

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
