What It Means to Be a Sustainable Design Firm

Sustainable design is a thoughtful, intentional approach to architecture and interiors that prioritizes both environmental responsibility and human well-being. At its core, sustainable design embraces principles such as choosing eco-friendly materials, maximizing energy efficiency, and making decisions that honor the health of both people and the planet.

What sets a truly sustainable design firm apart is its comprehensive care for every detail—from sourcing materials that are renewable, recycled, or have low environmental impact, to structuring spaces that reduce waste and conserve resources. This method involves using long-lasting, non-toxic materials and ensuring spaces are energy-efficient, often incorporating natural light, smart technologies, and efficient appliances to reduce energy consumption.

Energy efficiency is foundational: designs focus on passive strategies like natural ventilation and insulation, plus renewable energy sources, helping reduce buildings’ carbon footprints substantially. Water conservation is another key priority, with designs integrating water-saving fixtures and irrigation systems that minimize consumption. Indoor environmental quality is carefully considered by selecting low-VOC paints, ensuring proper ventilation, and even integrating plants to improve air quality and occupant health.

Sustainable design also embodies a holistic mindset, recognizing the interconnection between the environment, economy, and social factors. It supports “circular design” principles—favoring reuse, refurbishment, and recyclability over waste—thus extending the life cycle of materials and reducing landfill contributions. This perspective ensures that every choice nurtures future generations while respecting current needs.

Ultimately, sustainable design is not just about meeting environmental goals. It creates spaces that foster comfort, health, and well-being for the people who inhabit them. It's about making every design decision deliberate and caring, from the ground up, so that architecture and interiors do good—for us today and for the planet tomorrow.

By embracing these core principles, a sustainable design firm offers more than aesthetics; it offers a meaningful path toward a resilient, beautiful, and responsible future.

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
