Preparing for the Site Intake
Being properly prepared for the site intake will ensure more accurate dimensions and give us the best possible start to develop a design correctly the first time.
The best way for us to measure a space, is for that space to be completely empty. Of course, that is not always possible, so the next best thing is to ensure that we have access to as much wall space as possible. If we can’t see what we’re measuring, it may result in inaccuracies and cause design delays and/or challenges.
Our scanning/measure path will be along the perimeter of the room, so clearing that to the best extent possible will allow clear access. Please do not worry about moving furnishings, but boxes and miscellaneous storage in the corners are obstructions that will make measuring that much more difficult.
Areas we will most likely need to see:
Room corners
Room perimeter (around furnishings)
Windows (if possible clear space below the window, this can help us determine the height of the window).
This doesn’t mean your home has to be spotless (we have kids, we get it!). However, if you have piles of miscellaneous storage in the corners or along the walls, moving those items temporarily to the center of the space will ensure accuracy (and save the cost of repeat trips!).
Measuring Storage Rooms and Rooms with Storage Challenges:
Garages, storage rooms, and utility rooms can be very difficult to clear items from the walls. We cannot guarantee accurate dimensions however when the walls are inaccessible or blocked by large objects. We highly recommend clearing these spaces as much as possible to allow access for measurements.
We are creative and have been known to climb on/over items to reach those corners, but we also end up having to measure multiple times and have had to measure again right at the time of demolition start. This is a high-risk way to design, and we want to ensure we are ordering properly sized items, and developing an accurate design.
If a home has so many items that it is impossible to move items away from the walls, we highly recommend meeting first with a home organizer. Home organizers are skilled experts and can be a vital asset to the design process.
Let us know if you need the name/number of a great local home organizer!
