Do I Need a Designer for a Bathroom Remodel?

Belonging to several design groups over the years, I heard over and over “a designer should be involved in EVERY remodel”. I heard it so often that I believed it, and with all my heart.

It only occurred to me in recent years that a designer may not be necessary for every remodeling project.

Many simple aesthetic updates may just need a contractor and some great sub-contractors.

Aesthetic “Makeover” Bathroom Remodel

Some homeowners really know what they want in terms of aesthetic. Their bathroom layout functions well, but the cabinets may be delaminating, the floor peeling up, and the faucets are janky. Is a designer needed for this remodel project? Not necessarily.

There are definitely considerations to consider, and the homeowner should make selections wisely.

Just because that Etsy light fixture is cute in the photo and shows it next to a bathroom sink, that does not mean that it is UL-rated for a damp location. (PS- I love Etsy!)

There are important decisions to keep in mind, but consulting with your electrician, plumber, and tile installer should for the most part, get you where you need for a budget bathroom makeover project.

The Utilitarian Bathroom Remodel

We don’t all have over-the-top budgets, and sometimes we’re looking for a bathroom that… well, is simply a place to use the toilet. It might be a basement spare bathroom that has some damage and just needs a little update to keep the spiders out and the toilet from leaking.

A Designer creates… DESIGNER spaces

When a DESIGNER space is desired, then yes- you’ll want to hire a designer. A designer bathroom will be unique, show-stopping, luxurious, long-lasting, and hopefully sustainable and healthy to boot!

Designers are trained artists who specialize in functional, higher-end spaces created for your comfort. A designer remodeled bathroom will not look like everything found on Pinterest, it will be the new and amazing thing that hasn’t been seen yet.

So, do you need a designer for a bathroom remodel? Not necessarily. It ultimately depends on what you want to get out of your bathroom!

Rachel Waldron

Waldron Designs was founded by Rachel Waldron (that’s me!). in 2013.

I am so happy designing that it is not unusual to catch me in a giggle as I rev up to do my work. I think of my designs the way that I think of my children- each is unique and has their own personality. It is my job to nurture them and help them grow, not define them.

I got my bachelor's degree in interior design from Washington State University - a CIDA-accredited school - in 2005, immediately moved into a leadership position and have continued designing with passion.

I received my MBA in Marketing in 2012 and launched Waldron Designs in 2013. When I am not designing, you will find me enjoying my precious time with my husband and two spectacular children.
