High-Contrast, Art-Lovers Refuge

I met Linda and Rick through a mutual friend when I was doing a radio show with her about the commonalities between interior design and yoga (more on that another time). I could not have been more thrilled to see Linda and Rick's wonderful ecclectic style. This was the first opportunity to work on something with such contrast. Linda is legally blind, so the contrast brought more than aesthetic value. The couple are lovers of art, collecting new pieces regularly, so the ability to rotate art and have the home offer a gallery of sorts was important.

The first step was to establish the atmosphere. once we had some basic drawings, it was time to create the feeling of the space with finish and fixture suggestions. linda loved florals and wanted floral prints filling the home, while rick was not so sure about that. a compromise was to use abstractions of floral print, or to use it minimally.

We designed the bathroom to allow them to come in from their gorgeous garden work and wash, the bedroom to provide a private art gallery with a public view to the garden, and a year later we returned to dress their newly-built deck for the Vashon Garden Show!
