How we work

Time and Billing:

We work on a flat fee, quoted after meetings and a clear understanding of client and job scope OR an hourly basis, at a rate of $135 per hour for interior design services and $140 per hour for architectural services.

If we bill as a flat fee - we bill as we complete certain phases of the project. These phases often overlap, so it's billed at point of substantial completion and payable immediately. Because it can be easy to let a project run on, we set clear deadlines, and bill by those deadlines. In order to keep your project on schedule, it is important that you meet deadlines given to you as well. We work on several projects simultaneously, and if deadlines are missed, we are forced to move that project to the bottom of the list. We require a portion of the fee, up front, to start and get things rolling. That fee is used as a retainer and will be applied to your final installment.

If we are billing hourly - invoices are sent weekly to prevent any large, surprise bills. Hourly time must be scheduled two weeks in advance.

With hourly billing - we charge for design assistant time when they are working on CAD drawings, sourcing products, or visiting a job site or showroom for me for your project. We do not charge for their time when they accompany the design lead to job sites or meetings; so, for instance, you're not going to get double-charged if two of us come. Their time is billed out at $85 per hour, with drive time included.

All invoices are sent digitally. We accept check, credit card, and wire transfer.

On a tight timeline? If you have a tight deadline, and your project needs to be addressed sooner rather than later, an additional fee will be charged to accommodate your urgent needs.

One-time Consultations:

We have often had requests for a one-time consultation, and this is a great way to get your ideas out with a professional set of eyes and ears on your ideas. We charge $300 for a consultation in your Vashon home. We travel to areas within 1 hour of Vashon (including ferry time), such as West Seattle, Tacoma, and Port Orchard as well. These consultations are $540 and are limited in availability. We do offer Skype consultations for all locations at the $30We have found 90-minutes for a one-time consultation works best for us.

If you’re looking for a specific answer to design dilemma you may have, I have a service dedicated to that, Designed-in-a-Click.

Average costs:

While I cannot give you a definitive cost without seeing your space and discussing scope with you, I can tell you some averages based on previous projects. One of the best ways to determine your design fee is to look at the overall budget for your project. A design fee is typically 10-12% of that budget. So, if you have a $100,000 budget, it would be a good rule of thumb to expect $10,000 of that to go to design fees.

Why this works: At a glance it may seem as though designers simply charge more because you have more money. This is not the case at all. A $20,000 kitchen for example, will likely have much less detail and will probably be looking for simplified services vs. an $80,000 kitchen which will have much more custom design work. I do not develop fees based on budget, and yet, I almost always find this rule of thumb to be accurate.

Communication:

Because we are frequently on the road, in meetings, and highly focused on individual project work, we prefer digital communication. E-mail is great, but it can easily get lost amid the world of junk mail. For that reason, we prefer all communication happen within our client portal. This keeps all communication pertaining to your project in one, easily accessible space. Messages sent to you through the portal will show up in your email box, so that you never miss anything.

That said, I am absolutely not opposed to discussing your project on the phone! My business line rings through to my cell phone during business hours (the line shuts off after hours, but you may leave a message at any time). Note that while I may receive text messages on this line, they are redirected to my email,so that I can give your project my full attention. I do not respond to text messages on weekends or after hours. Text message read and response time is tracked and billed at 15 minutes per text.

I have just moved into a commercial office space in the Vashon Landing. We may meet and present here at any time, though keep in mind that if you plan on stopping by unannounced, we may be out on a site visit.
