Lighting: Discretion vs. Flamboyance
We all have our own personal styles at Waldron Designs, but in the end, what we design is tailored to what our clients desire and what suits their styles. That said, when it comes to lighting, I’m a “go big or disappear” kinda gal. I love light fixtures that fill a space and steal the show. It is light after all, one of the most wonderful things we can have in an interior space. So, why not go big?
Flamboyance.
While I love for a fixture to dominate a space and be extremely flamboyant in nature, I’ll be honest that most people… don’t. Most people like a fixture that is in scale with the room. Something that provides the function but doesn’t take away from other features. And, this lighting is what we’ll typically find in our portfolio, because regardless of what my personal style is, I respect the wishes of our clients. I find one of the thrills of design being the need to adapt and adjust to suit the client’s aesthetic. Part of being a designer is being a chameleon!
Discretion.

My other personal preference is for the source of lighting to be invisible. I love washing walls with light, allowing light to appear as though it’s seeping through the cracks in the walls, or even better for the wall itself to appear to glow. I adore lighting that fades into the walls, much like what we did in our Vashon Hanger Home with paintable wall sconces that were painted the same color as the walls and located on the inside walls of skylight wells.
In spaces designed for me, I would likely do a bit of both, with some key areas that have phenomenal scale and flamboyance with the lighting and other spaces where the light source is entirely invisible.
